Tommy Cooper, is it time for a biopic?

“A blind bloke walks into a shop with a guide dog. He picks the Dog up and starts swinging it around his head. Alarmed, a shop assistant calls out: ‘Can I help, sir?’ ‘No thanks,’ says the blind bloke. ‘Just looking.’”

Now I have no idea if there is actually a film based on the life of the late great Tommy Cooper, but if one is ever made then surely Jeffrey Rush is to one to play him?  There were a few scenes in the King’s Speech I thought he had a striking resemblance to him.  Maybe I’m going mad?  I hope not.

The charisma and comic timing he showed in The Kings Speech was done to perfection, and it wouldnt be a bad thing for the legend of Tommy Cooper to get a bit of worldwide exposure.  Here’s keeping my fingers crossed…

I think his is a story that needs to be told, behind the scenes he was quite the brute to his wife and a slave to the bottle, but on-stage all that fell away and he became the legend we know him as today, I don’t think Rush would suit purely because of age, with biopics, if you’re going to cover a good chunk of someone’s life you probably need someone in their early/mid thirties, that way they can pass as the character in their 20’s, and age-up to look older. Question is, it something Hollywood could understand? or would it make better a BBC4 affair?

I’m surprised the BBC haven’t made a biopic already, though I’d love it if his life got some Hollywood exposure. I’m not sure if his shows we’re ever aired in America, but I’m sure they would ‘get’ his humour if they were to watch him.

Out of interest, are there any actors out there who you think would do a good job of playing him?
