Like most people, I enjoyed the wedding

After the massive build-up to an event which I thought I would never care about, I woke up on Friday 29th April feeling a sense of excitement for William and Kate’s wedding.  I can’t explain why, as I’ve never really had that much interest in the Royals, but for some reason me and a couple of billion other people around the world were looking forward to the day ahead.

Thankyou for my day off work 🙂

I was planning to watch the wedding at a friend’s house but watched some of the build-up with my parents to see Prince William and Harry being driven to the Abbey.  Like them or not, we have pretty much grown up with these two, and to see them both together on such an important day was quite special.  Ever since we saw them at their mother’s funeral we’ve seen them go through quite a lot, especially Harry anyway, from his venture with cannabis to dressing as a Nazi.  For these two I guess growing up in the public eye was like being in the Truman show, and I don’t particularly envy that.

So anyway after seeing them get to the Abbey I quickly headed over to my friend’s house, where a group of us were planning an all-day drink-up and a BBQ.  I started the day on a bottle of white wine, though I had to slow down as by 11am I was feeling slightly tipsy.

After watching the Queen and the legendary Prince Philip being driven to the Abbey I saw Kate follow soon after.  I found it quite funny when the TV commentator got excited at announcing that Sarah Burton had designed Kate’s wedding dress, though it was nice to see it was British designed and made.  If the cameraman had spotted a ‘made in China’ label I would have switched channel.

By this time my friend discovered the street behind his garden was having a street party to celebrate the wedding.  How cool is that?  I didn’t think neighbours socialised anymore.

So back to the TV and Kate’s very proud father led her down the aisle, with incredibly epic music in the background adding to the amazing atmosphere.  It was like something out of a high-budget fantasy film, except this was real life, and seeing all these rich decorations on display was very amazing.  Ok so some of the gold on display was probably stolen from other countries, but you know, finders keepers and all that.

Epic

After William put the ring on Kate’s finger, the speeches and choir singing followed, which I admit I twiddled my thumbs to a bit.  I have much respect though for Kate’s brother James for giving a reading infront of so many people.  That must have taken real balls for an ordinary guy to do that and I bet he’s still on a high right now.

Balls of Steel

It’s also nice to get introduced to a real princess rather than the fake ones the press throw at us.  For the past couple of years we’ve been told that Cheryl Cole was the ‘people’s princess’ and how we all adored her and how all the girls wanted to be like her, but now that we have Kate you really cannot compare the two.  Kate really does come across as the perfect princess for William, you’d be hard-pressed to find a fault with her.

So anyway despite a great day, I was quite disheartened by a few negative comments on Facebook about the wedding.  I won’t name names, but one comment stood out for me. “Can’t say I understand the fuss about a couple of over-privileged dullards getting married. People celebrating as if they’re close personal friends is just bizarre. Still, 30% chance of rain could liven things up. Seeing the couple and these nutters lining the street getting a good dousing would really warm the cockles!”

I just don’t understand how some people can put others down for having a good time.  It’s not often that millions of people come together and celebrate.  And you really don’t have to know somebody personally to give yourself an excuse to celebrate them.

Another negative person who really annoys me is Morrissey.  Not content with writing depressing songs,  he also decided he didn’t want anybody else to enjoy the day of the wedding.  It’s a shame when you see a man grow old who still cannot find the recipe for happiness, and he had this to say about the event.  “During the week of the royal dreading, Poly Styrene died. Having made an enormous contribution to British art and sound – at a desperate time when so many of us needed her – Poly Styrene’s death was all but ignored by the British television news media, who instead rained hours and hours of blubbering praise onto Kate Middleton – a woman about whom nothing is known on a personal level.  The message is clear: What you achieve in life means nothing compared to what you are born into. Is this Syria?”

At 51 years old, Morrissey still cannot get enough vitamin D

I really hope his fans don’t just blindly nod their heads and agree with him.  And who the hell is Poly Styrene?  I Spotified her music and wasn’t impressed with what I heard.  Sorry Morrissey, its sad that your friend has died, but I’d rather enjoy a Royal wedding than mourn someone I’ve never heard of before.

You can call the Royals whatever you want, but at the end of the day this occasion brought hundreds of millions of people together into a massive celebration.  It’s not often you get neighbours coming together to arrange street parties or an excited Verger performing cartwheels down the Abbey.

After endless news reports on death and destruction, its nice to finally see something that brings a smile to people’s faces.  These are exciting times to be British, with the Olympics next year we can look forward to another event where we all come together and celebrate with a few beers.

Some people can all moan all they want about the Royals,  about the economy and the crime rate etc. It’s just moan after moan after moan.  But at the end of the day the world isn’t perfect, and neither are you.  So the next time a Royal decides to get married and we all get a day off work, treat yourself to a lay-in, crack open a bottle of beer, and enjoy the moment.
