When it was first announced that the 2012 olympics would be held in London I was quite proud to have it hosted in my home city. I wasn’t one the few who was moaning about the cost of it, I just wanted us to host an amazing event that would be the envy of the world.
However now I can’t help but feel slightly put off by the whole event . It started a few weeks ago when I was driving to work, and the radio station were giving away olympic tickets to competition winners. I thought that all the tickets would be sold fairly in the ballot, and not through sponsors.
Then I saw in the news that the Government have ordered thousands of tickets for themselves. Why do politicians deserve to fast-track their way ahead of the public?
And then I see that relatives of the athletes are not guaranteed tickets, and that they have to apply like the rest of us. Why do MPs get priority over the relatives?
And to top it all off I see quite a few people have unfairly missed out on tickets. One person who requested £12,000 worth of tickets has got them all, whilst I have requested £400 worth of tickets and received nothing. I understand that it’s impossible for every resident in England to get tickets, but if space is so tight then they should have sold tickets for one event per person.
There will be another wave of tickets to go on sale, but I don’t really have the urge to watch the first round of weightlifting or archery.
But I guess it’s not all bad. The £400 I set aside can now go on something else. It’s time to get the debit card out and do some internet shopping 🙂
