Whenever I see this question, my instant response is “hell yes”. But then I think about it a little bit deeper, and I’m not so sure. I have a strong feeling that if I suddenly became rich, then I would probably get very bored indeed.
I take this view because of what I’ve experienced in computer games. For instance when I play the Sims 3, I start the game off with a small house with a small bank balance, and then I spend time progressing my character up the career ladder, so that he can earn more money which means I can buy him a flash new TV or a new car. Maybe I should focus on my own career rather than the virtual me, but that’s for another topic I guess.
Anyway the point I’m making is that as soon as I begin to use cheats to give the virtual me tens of millions of pounds to spend, I get an initial rush of excitement because I can buy whatever I want, and then when I do buy everything, I soon find out that there’s nothing left to play for. Whats next? Nothing, so I get bored and quit.
Now I’m not saying that if I suddenly became rich that I would get bored and quit my life, that would be a bit drastic. But I guess I’m the sort of person that needs routine. If I don’t have a job to go to, I get lazy to the point where I don’t even bother brushing my teeth in the morning.
Some people can stay disciplined with themselves but that’s really not the case with me. A couple of years ago I was jobless for a few months and my sleeping pattern turned into something more suited to a vampire.
I also don’t understand how someone with millions in the bank could not feel guilty about all they have. I mean, it’s bad enough when I’m having dinner and I turn on the news to see Somalian children starving to death. Now I know I’m lucky to have a place to live and a job etc, but if I was rich I would just feel ridiculous.
It may be a bit silly to base this just on a computer game, but I imagine its true. However just incase I’m wrong, I will play the lottery at the weekend. Just incase 🙂
