Everybody Should Eat Dosas

Dosa is a funny word, and not one I’d associate with food. I’d associate it more with a nap or feeling a bit tired.
The Dosa can also look quite bland, which proves that looks can be deceiving, as it a delicious and cheap food that really deserves more exposure.

If you’re wondering what a Dosa is, well I’ll try to explain, though i won’t do it any justice. Just imagine a strange crispy thin bread style wrap made of lentils and rice, with a filling of potato and possibly cheese.

I was introduced to Dosas a short while ago at a restaurant near Euston Station. Mirel was eager to introduce me to the Dosa but to be honest I wasn’t too keen, the name just sounded a bit too authentically Indian to me. I was then even less keen when the waiter served me my dish, for when you first feast your eyes on one you’ll immediately compare it to a pancake, and I don’t even like pancakes. However after taking my first bite I was instantly hooked.

Now I can’t get enough of them. To find a food that is healthy and filling and cheap is rare indeed. I enjoy picking at the wrap from the sides before digging into the potato filling, mixing it together with the chutney and coconut sauces. Every letter I type is making me hungry.

One problem though is that there are not many Dosa houses near where I live. This means I’ve been going to the same Dosa house so many times I’m worried the waitress will think I have a problem.

I’ve also noticed that Dosa houses are only in areas of London where there is a high population of Indians, which means I seem to be the only white guy who visits these restaurants. I know I’m only being paranoid, but whenever I eat anything spicey I imagine all the other Indians are eagerly looking at me, waiting to see when my face turns red. Suffice to say I think after 3 months of eating Dosas my tolerance levels are now acceptable to the average Indian.

So I highly recommend the Dosa to anyone who likes potatoes or indian food. You really cannot go wrong with one (or two).
