ELO

Electric Light Orchestra is a wonderful name for a band, though after a while you cannot help but refer to them as ELO.

I saw ELO recently at the O2 Arena, but I went as somebody who isn’t really a fan. The production values of their records are dated like the early Dr Who episodes, and I wonder how they would have sounded if they were around 10 years earlier before all the weird 70s sound effects.

Which is why listening to them live is so much more enjoyable than on a record. Standing in the Rain is such a joy to listen to when you can hear the musicianship over a Producer pressing buttons.

The bandmembers themselves look like a random group of misfits, from the vampy violin player to the pianist who looks like a hairdresser, and the backing singer who without the 12 string guitar would look like your typical Ibiza holiday rep, but musically they all clicked together like lego. And if Jeff Lynne isn’t wearing a wig then I really want to know what his secret is.
