For me, classical music is very much like a fine white wine. White wine was once a drink I found repulsive. My face would break up into a thousand pieces just by the smell of that weird fruity aroma. But after a while my taste buds matured, beer become boring, and Pinot Grigio became my drink of choice.
I have the same relationship with classical music. The younger version of me could never have the patience to sit through an entire symphony. I could never appreciate the skill and craft that went into such music, and I’d much rather have listened to heavy metal power chords on volume 11 than an orchestra. 6 strings was enough for me, but now listening to classical is one my favourite pastimes.
Opera music however is more like a red wine, and that’s not a good thing. No matter how hard I try, I just cannot get into it, and I wonder if I’m just too young to appreciate it, or the people who do enjoy it just have bad taste.
I recently attended Prom 65, and a large chunk of it was opera. Whilst I enjoyed it in parts, it’s clear my ears are simply not mature or cultured enough.
The soprano had an incredible voice, hitting high notes that made Mariah Carey sound like Barry White in comparison. The talent is plain for all to see, and hopefully one day I will enjoy it as much as classical.
But for now, I’ll just stick with the white wine.
