When you dislike something that millions of others enjoy, it can make you feel slightly alien. Hamilton, the theatre show that has universal acclaim from critics and audiences everywhere, should have been an incredible show that I’d want to rewatch over and over again. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be going back.
When I’m the only one in the audience who isn’t clapping in absolute joy at the end of another rap song, is it because I just don’t get it? Or is everybody just clapping to fit in? Maybe the audience are better actors than the actors on stage.
Me and my wife left at the interval, which feels like a shameful thing to do. It’s like leaving a wedding before the best man’s speech, or a restaurant before dinner is served. But sometimes you shouldn’t just suffer for the sake of it, and if you are really smooth you can head towards the smokers area and just keep walking.
We had only left at the interval once before, but that was for a horrible show at an East End theatre that was set in a East End high street. They had big red cardboard buses and puppet pigeons. No escapism to be found here.
But really, time is precious, and it’s far too precious to spend watching rap songs about the constitution.
