Ludwig

You know that feeling towards the end of a football match when your team is drawing 0-0, it’s quite a boring game and you are thinking of leaving early. You stay in the hope that something interesting might happen, but soon enough the referee blows for full time. There was no goal and nothing of note really happened. It was a total waste of time, and even though this seems quite harsh, that to me sums up season 2 of Ludwig.

We live in an era where we are spoilt for choice with TV shows, and despite all the big name series from the likes of Netflix and Apple TV, i found myself watching Ludwig. It was cosy, pleasant with just the right amount of death, and it was always fun seeing David Mitchell work out the murder of the week. The over arching mystery added a nice bit of depth to proceedings.

Season 2 then came out to rave reviews. I was looking forward to more of the same. Instead we got underbaked weekly murders, and it became clear that the overarching mystery was also a mystery to the writers.

We had a bizarre finale where they stupidly killed off Chief Constable Ziegler (who had a remarkably deep voice), and the interrogation of an MP which ended up going nowhere, and so we ended up with the good guys retreating to the East Anglia Advertiser, gearing up to plot against the villain. Then unfortunately, the season ended. It was a most unsatisfying conclusion.

With any half decent story, it’s a good thing when the audience is not sure what’s going to happen next. But when it’s clear to the audience that the writers don’t know either, then it doesn’t give us much hope for season 3.
