Once a week, our office provides us with a free lunch or breakfast. It’s a great perk, and one I’ll never take for granted. Walking into the staff cafe to find a huge buffet of free food will never get old.
Some catering choices are influenced by the time of year, so for Diwali we’ll have Indian food, and for Christmas we have Christmassy food. You get the idea.
At the moment it’s Black History Month, and so we are ordering our catering from black owned businesses. It’s a great idea, and unlike all of the other landmarks in the calendar that we follow, which is usually for one week only, we are showing our commitment to the cause by doing this for 4 whole weeks.
What irks me though, is that we don’t actually have any black employees. You’d think an office in London could find at least one black person to work for us?
And if nobody is qualified for any role (which is hard to believe), surely giving an opportunity to a black person is worth more than buying jerk chicken for 4 weeks of the year?
We have books in our reception area about Black History Month, we have posters on our walls promoting Black History Month, and we even had an email sent by one of the Partners raising awareness about Black History Month.
So, should we hire black people? No thanks. The food is great though.
